More Zine Hall of Fame

Here's our 4th list of inductees for our MUSEA ZINE HALL OF FAME. Six new members join our past 28. (For a complete list send SASE or $1 to Musea or soon to be on our website.)

We looked for:

1. Publishing work over a long period of time

2. Publishing consistently high quality work.

3. Zines mostly related to the arts.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL NEW MEMBERS!

1.MAXIMUMROCKNROLL: This long running San Francisco punk zine is the one all the others imitate. From the early days of zines to now, MRR is the music zine everyone loves, hates, and debates, big sprawling coverage of indie music and virtually every related topic.

2. CRAWFISH: Stephanie Webb's humor zine is not hit and miss funny but consistently funny and clever with "Clip Art World Cartoons", "The Wit and Wisdom of John Madden", and something `cheesy' (originating in the cheese state Wisconsin before moving west) in every issue. A popular zinc with good reason - it's fun.

3. OPERA VAGABOND Hit the road with opera singer, Stephano. OV has got all the ingredients that make a great perzine: total diary-frank honesty, a fascinating personality, and great adventure that's written well. After a long stint with the emotionally draining touring company of 'Phantom of the Opera', Stephano is now living a less hectic life in Alaska of all places. `What's next?' readers ask.

4. AMUSING YOURSELF TO DEATH: A GUIDE TO SURFING THE PAPERNET: Editor Ruel Gaviola has been consistently building a zine review zine that has grown to include not only zinc reviews with the longest, most in depth reviews in Zineland (with news and related events etc.) but a distro co., a website, and he's even found time to co-sponsor the `98 Zinc Fest in his hometown Santa Barbara. With his ability to get so much done, a growing 1st rate staff of reviewers, and an attitude that supports virtually everyone in zines, the future is only up for AYTD.

TWO NEXT MEMBERS are fine zinesters in their own write, but here we salute them for their unique contributions in supporting zines:

5. VICTORIA CROWDER-BENZ (zine: Cynical Soul) Victoria has tirelessly worked as a board member of the Greater Kansas City Coalition Against Censorship and is co-founder of the Midwest Underground Media Symposium (MUMS). Each May she helps sponsor the country's premier anti-censorship event. One of the outcomes of that event is her zine classic (now in its 2nd edition) "Zinc the Story of a Four Lettcr Word" that tells of the trials against censorship of 9 celebrated zines and their authors. We salute the "Lipstick Philosopher."

6. JOHN DOYLE (zine:Cocteau's Children) We congratulate this Pennsylvanian high school journalism teacher for his "Zine Project', a program that has allowed his students to make their own zines for grades. Some of these zines are promising, some are awful, but what's important is that John has given these students the ability for total freedom of speech and total creative control of their words. And that experience has got to be not only instructive but liberating!

WE SALUTE Y'ALL and frameable certificates are in the mail
