Vessels large may venture more, But little boats should "art surf" by shore - B. Franklin
ALIEN FASHION: "Why do aliens wear clothes at all? Even scaly, reptilian ones are modest. After all, battle gear and other accessories can be belted on. Why do aliens use fabric? Why not, for instance light, or paint? Why do all the aliens of any given planet dress the same way? Why not just let scientists and engineers dress badly?" Voyager Girl (W).
MiniQUIZ: If TV signals travel the speed of light, how far out are the signals for I Love Lucy? Answer later.
FALLINGWATER IS FALLING DOWN! F.L.Wright's residential masterpiece has problems. Roof and windows leak, and the concrete cantilevered terrace over the waterfall is sagging. A $7 million restoration effort will start in fall with hidden steel cables to keep it standing. (Nat Geo).
MONTHLY GOODIES: This month we can recommend the following. TV: for some reason ever since his operation, David Letterman has been hot. Something about his attitude is looser, more wacky than ever. Also check out MAD TV for great characters like, Rusty, UPS Man, Lancome Lady, and Miss Swan.
RADIO: Weekends are the best time for radio. I'm enjoying Hubcap Carter's oldies show on KAAM with his weekly salute to Jimmy Reed one of my favorites (I do I'm the Man Down There in my box office shows)
MUSIC: Dallas resident Charlie Pride was inducted into the Country Music Hall Of Fame.
PHOTOGRAPHY, check out the portraits of David Donovan at the Afterimage Gallery (his work has appeared in Musea)
TECH: You can now buy "crank" radios that get their power from hand cranking and solar energy. No batteries to buy or throw away- ever!
ARCHITECTURE And speaking of doing things right, London has 2 new structures people are talking about. After 5 years and $315 mill, the Bankside Power Station on the south Bank of the Thames is now the Tate Modern with a world class collection of modern art. The 150 meter long sculpture room is a standout. Also their London Eye, giant Ferris Wheel, (that didn't work at the millennium party) is such a hit that now Boston, Sydney, and Johannesburg, want one too. (Conde Nast Traveler)
GAMES ANYONE? "I don't think people realize how big the gaming industry is. The (computer) game industry is about the same as the film industry, something like $7 billion last year for both as I recall." Kirt Witte! (TFVN)
CHUMP OF THE MONTH Is the ad for Sonata - some kind of drug. They take one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever composed (1rst movement of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata for piano) and add a screeching female voice and other instruments !It improves Beethoven's work as much as crayon would improve Mona Lisa's smile!
WE REMEMBER THE PASSING OF: Loretta Young, actress. I remember her for her fashionable TVshow entrances. Sir Alec Guinness. In Kind Hearts & Coronets he plays all 7 family members. Also known for his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars. Nancy Marchand, actress. Played Lou Grant's boss in Lou Grant.
QUOTE: Children's science books- an excellent intro to a subject not because they're dumbed down but because they are an excellent synthesis and summary of a topic. - Alden Scott Crow.
UNCLE MILTIE: After Milton Berle sued NBC in May, they DID find the kinescops of Berle's early TV shows. Berle feared that this priceless piece of TV history was lost forever. He had sued saying that they had misplaced or given away the 128 original comedy shows in violation of his co-ownership agreement. (Reuters) AND speaking of TV - miniQUIZ answer is: TV signals , travelling at the speed of light have reached about 1,500 stars in a 50 light year radius. (NatGeo)
