The year 2003 was an important year in my work as a musician, painter, writer, etc. and maybe a noteworthy year in the history of art. 2003 was the year I spotlighted 30 years of my artwork in a number of special issues of Musea, my monthly zine. Now that it's about done - with 2 issues to go in 2004 - and all my work is either in these special issues OR has already appeared in the earlier 120 issues of Musea - I can say this:
I think no one in art has done more art in more varied areas with higher quality than I have.
Had I said that bold statement before 2003, some readers may well have said, "Talk, talk, talk". But now I have the evidence in print (and on the website) - it's "there, there, there." And all this culminating from my year long publishing event. Now that's conceptual art! Finally, I can say with relief, most of my art work and art ideas - a lifetime's worth - are out there - there where everyone can see them.
Certainly I am the first to say that in each individual art form there are artists that surpass me - there have been better composers, or musicians, or singers; there have been better painters, there have been better novelists, or poets, or playwrights, or essayists etc. But there has not been any single artist in history that has done all the above, plus film scripts, architectural designs, clothes designs, and all the rest listed below.
So now - now that 2003 is over and 2004 has begun, I would like to list my reasons why I feel this is such a singular year in art. Then you investigate and determine for yourself.
