It's Vienna, the city of music, May 1, 1835. Orchestras are going to dance halls, street musicians are heading for their lucky spots. Then the Emperor of Austria died and they decreed 6 weeks of mourning during which no music would be allowed. That was a death sentence of starvation to some if nothing could be done. So they draped their instruments in mourning crepe, went to their usual street corners, laid out their hats for tips, and stood their silently.
